Stylist Spotlight: Bryant Mathis

The FHI Heat Artistic Team consists of so many wonderful artists with great talent. Today we sat down with one of our team artists, Bryant Mathis, who joined FHI Heat in October 2014. A confessed color junkie, Bryant’s passion for making the perfect blonde, won the Aveda Blonde Competition in 2018, earning him a photoshoot with the Global Artistic Directors.

Most recently, he was nominated by Midwest Hair Styling Awards for 2019 Hair Colorist of the Year. His passion for cutting edge styles, while ensuring healthy hair, led him to the FHI HEAT ARTISTIC TEAM. Over the last six years Bryant has brought his high energy and passion for hair to the team. We wanted to learn a little more about where he gets his passion and how he uses it to push himself creatively.

What do you enjoy most about working with FHI Heat?

BM: Some of my favorite things have been getting to travel and meet great stylists around the country. I love each member of the FHI Team. Every time we get together at shows or for educational classes, we become more and more like a family. Each member of the Artistic Team along with Stevie Robinson, our Education Manager, has helped push me outside my comfort zone to elevate my craft and the love for this industry.

I also love the tools of course! I currently have four favorites (I can’t choose just one!) The Accelerate Dryer, EPS Styling Iron, Platform 1 inch Bounce Pro Curler and the UNbrush - literally the best multi use brush ever!

What does it mean to you to be named a Midwest Hair Colorist of the Year Finalist?

BM: Being one of the finalists for Hair Colorist of the Year for Midwest has been an honor. Some of the judges were people that helped shaped the way I look at hair. Lupe Voss - whose hair color magic class changed hair color for me. Ana Karzis - brought me inspiration when I needed it. Janell Geason – I had the opportunity to do a photoshoot with her and watch her passion for makeup and her eye for detail behind the camera. And it meant a lot having so much support, especially from Stevie Robinson, Tod McClelland and my family.

What advice would you give young stylists who are just starting out?

BM: If you are passionate about what you do, keep at it and don’t listen to people that tell you that you can’t do it. Keep people around you that inspire you. Inspiration and inspiring things create wonderful change. Find someone that you admire in this industry and don’t be afraid to ask them for help. I love when people message me asking for help, we have all been there and should be supporting one another. And most important, always do your work with passion. If you don’t have passion for it don’t do it, it’s ok to only be a colorist or only do haircuts - it will make this career more fulfilling!
