Naturally Curly Hair Tips For Summer Humidity

If you’ve lived with curly hair for long enough, you know that, while beautiful, it has the characteristics of an angsty teen. You never know when your curls are going to act moody and edgy, or when they are going to be bouncy and cheerful. It’s a total toss-up on the regular. It’s time to bring your curls into an age of maturity. There are many things you can do to straighten out the attitude of your curls without actually straightening them out. Here are some of the best tips on how to manage and style curly hair, to keep it in control without dimming any of its bountiful personality.

Girl combing curly hair from bottom up

Comb from the bottom up

Curly hair is fragile, so you want to treat it with care. That said, it can get really tangly. To detangle while maintaining your hair’s health, you’ll want to make sure to brush from the bottom up. This way, you work your way through the knots rather than compounding them into bigger ones. We suggest using a comb or a detangling brush, such as the Unbrush. Not only will it work better for your hair, but it also will hurt much less to brush with!

Girl holding dryer diffuser

A diffuser is your soulmate

If you are going to have a love affair with any tool, choose the diffuser. A diffuser is a dryer attachment which streamlines pockets of the hot air. How does this help your hair? Well, it will help to even out your curls and the pattern in which they twist. Additionally, it will minimize frizz and add some gorgeous natural-looking volume to your hair that will be built to last!

Invest in a curler

Although you have already been blessed with curls, you are going to want to add a curler to your collection of products. At the end of the day, this tool is really for touch-ups or to add a splash of dimension to your already gorgeous style. Because it’s not a tool you’ll be using often, and because you’ll be using it for smaller styling fixes, we suggest getting a professional-grade travel-sized curler. That way you have it for trips as well!

Try smoothing products

To brighten and tame your curls, smoothing serums and sprays are going to be very helpful. Products such as Sheer Remedy Liquid Satin Treatment are going to be great for reducing frizz that curly hair tends to hold onto. Not to mention, it’s also a thermal protectant. This is a requirement if you plan on using any heat whatsoever on those locks!

Get cozy with your stylist

Curly hair is a style that makes split ends especially evident. Not only can they be seen easily, but they also contribute to frizz and a messy bedhead look. To help yourself out, you are going to want to get a trim more often than your straight-haired friends. We’re talking every six weeks or so to keep you looking fresh! This means that your stylist is going to become part of your inner-circle, which is an awesome bonus!

Woman with conditioned hair

Stay conditioned

Curls look their best when they are hydrated and looking healthy. That’s why you are going to need to start a conditioning regimen that you follow strictly. Products such as Daily Beauty’s Satin Finish Conditioning Treatment will help repair and condition your hair between trims. You’ll find yourself waking up with hair that is less frizzy and contains less flyaways. All the while, you will be adding to the health of your hair and preventing future damage.

Braids are your friends

Styling can be tough, especially during the hotter months when you just want your hair to be out of the way. For curls especially, braids are an awesome tool. They can be used to pull all of your hair back, or they can be used to get the hair out of the frame of your face. One of our favorite looks is the braided headband, which braids a section of your hair framing your face and sweeps it across to use as a way to keep your hair back without requiring you throw it into an updo!

Silk pillowcase

Add a silk pillowcase to your bed

If you haven’t discovered the silk pillowcase, let us introduce you! It’s an awesome easy, luxurious way to easily bring life into your curls. Regular pillowcases are often made of nylon, cotton, or polyester. These materials can actually steal the moisture from your hair as you sleep each night! A silk pillowcase, on the other hand, allows you to keep your moisture and reduce friction! As good as they are for your hair, they are even better for your skin. It’s a no-brainer.
