Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day in Quarantine

Quarantine has canceled tons of plans, but no way is Mother’s Day going to be one of them! It’s the one day a year when your mom can be reminded that all the hardships you put her through as an angsty teen were well worth it. We’d call that essential business, wouldn’t you? There are various ways that you can make your mom smile this Mother’s Day, whether you are quarantined with her or celebrating from afar.

If you’re quarantined together

Give her breakfast in bed

This is a Mother’s Day gesture that’s as classic as a coupon for a hug. Bring back some of your childhood nostalgia by cooking her a gourmet breakfast in bed. Skip the pancake mix and research a recipe for a fancy quiche. If your mom is a little funky, you can even top it off with a bubbly mimosa.

Give her a mani/pedi

Self-care has taken a backseat since quarantine has become a regular way of life, but on Mother’s Day it doesn’t have to! If you’ve got steady hands, you can give your mother a real manicure and pedicure. Go all out by improvising a foot-soak and using her favorite lotions.

Clean the house

A clean house means a peaceful mind. If your mother is the one who is constantly cleaning the home during quarantine, do her a favor and take over the cleaning. But don’t just vacuum or fluff throw pillows. Get down and dirty with a truly deep scrub of her entire house. You have no idea how much she’ll appreciate it.

Order a puzzle of a family photo to do together

A puzzle is a fantastic way to enjoy some quality time with your mother, and it’s not an option to cure your quarantine boredom either. There are tons of companies online who will take a photo you provide them and send a puzzle of that photo to your house! This is not only a sweet surprise for mom, but a plan for the whole day.

Host a restaurant-style dinner for her

Restaurant adventures are among the most missed things about life before quarantine. Set up a dining experience for your mom that mirrors a restaurant excursion. Set the table, wait on her hand and foot, and serve her a glass of wine. If her favorite restaurant is accepting takeout orders, you can request a delivery of her top picks from the menu!

If you’re celebrating from afar

Send her flowers or wine

Quarantine doesn’t have to mean a flowerless Mother’s Day. In fact, there are many companies still doing flower deliveries on Mother’s Day, and even more doing wine deliveries. Surprise your mother with a degree of normalcy amidst this crazy time by sending flowers or a nice bottle of wine to her front door.

Arrange for a family/friend drive-by

One of the sweetest ways people are celebrating birthdays and other events is by participating in car parades. This is when family and friends drive by someone’s home as a way to be together while social distancing. You can organize this with your family and friends if they live close to your mom’s home. People can write ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ on a poster board to display as they drive-by and say hello.

Create a video montage

Sometimes, the best gift on Mother’s Day is as simple as a ‘thank you.’ This Mother’s Day, you can contact your siblings and create a video montage of each family member describing why they are grateful for your mom on this special day. Let them know it’s as simple as shooting a selfie-video on a smartphone and sending you the video. Then, you can easily string the footage together and add some heartwarming music in the background. Just keep in mind, she’ll probably shed some tears.

Set up a Zoom party

One way that people are staying social during quarantine is through Zoom meetings. If you haven’t experienced one yet, just imagine a FaceTime session with multiple people at once. It’s a way for everyone to be in the same room together even when they are physically far apart. Contact your family members and arrange for a cute Zoom party to celebrate your mom. It’ll make her smile to see everyone together.

Gift your mother an in-home spa-day

Even though your mom can’t actually go to the spa on Mother’s day, she can still pamper herself. Online, you can find a variety of ‘spa-sets’ that you can have delivered to your mom so that she can relax on her special day. They often include bath bombs, robes, face masks, candles, and more.
