How To Recreate Emily Blunt’s Undone Updo From the Golden Globes

Emily Blunt wowed at the 2019 Golden Globes this past Sunday with an ethereal, yet strong, hair updo featuring braided beauty and undone texture. Pair that with a stunning Alexander McQueen gown and it’s no wonder everyone from People to Buzzfeed and Allure raved about the Mary Poppins Returns’ star’s entire look.

Celebrity hairstylist Laini Reeves used FHI Heat’s professional hair styling tools to create a gorgeous hairdo on Blunt that can be taken beyond the red carpet. From a feminine wedding look to a night out in a structured pantsuit, this updo is versatile and oh-so pretty. Here's how you can get the look at home.

Behind the Scenes

Reeves drew inspiration for the the look from Joan of Arc. Wanting to emulate a strong and feminine warrior with the look, Blunt’s hair brings out even more of the beauty of the detailed McQueen gown.

“Emily’s dress was intricately designed and textured, so we aimed to replicate a textured look in her hair as well” says Reeves.

Blunt’s hair and makeup beauty team slayed the entire look with makeup by Jenn Streicher (@jennstreicher), wardrobe styling by Jessica Paster (@highheelprncess), and nails by Jenn Hipp (@jennahipp).

We sat down with Laini Reeves to see exactly how she brought this hair magic to the red carpet.

How To Get Red Carpet Hair

This updo is definitely not the fishtail braid you grew up doing on yourself. This matured version is  practically perfect in every way. Reeves noted that “the Dutch braid, also known as a fishtail, was the final look we landed on because it showed femininity but with an un-done texture.”

To start, Laini applied leave-in conditioner (we love this one) and blow dried Emily’s hair using the FHI Heat Platform Limited Edition Chrome Hair Dryer in Rose Gold.

Once the hair was dried, she twisted strands of hair around her fingers to begin creating texture. She also used the FHI Heat Platform 1 1/2” Professional Curler to make the hair even more wavy.

Following the heat styling, Reeves added the and some dry texturizing spray and raked through her fingers, so Emily’s hair would swell up and create a thicker texture for a bulkier, fuller braid.
To finish, she secured the braid in a halo or horseshoe shape at the back of the head and used the FHI Heat Platform Plus Curve 1” Styling Iron to smooth the layers framing Emily’s face.

To hold the look in place, Reeves very lightly sprayed hairspray (this hairspray is perfect). In this case, to maintain the texture created, not to secure flyaways as these were part of the look and only added texture.
The look was topped off with jaw-dropping Neil Lane jewels that seemingly floated in the dreamy updo.
